![]() When you talk about the “Who’s Who” of Denver, you better include The Denver Post’s society editor, Joanne Davidson. Trust us: If you’re from or live in Colorado, you either A] know Joanne personally or B] know someone who knows her. Joanne gets invited to cover all the hot events and happenings around town—but her admiration and dedication for helping non-profits, charities and various organizations is truly remarkable. She cares. And when you read her column, you’ll see what we mean. She is one of the hardest working Colorado media members we know. Sure, it does help that she gets to cover some seriously fun and glitzy events. Since Joanne is always busy writing about other people, businesses and organizations around town, we figured it’s time for someone to write about her! Who is Joanne Davidson? Find out now—she filled out 15 fabulous moments and facts about herself exclusively for Colorado Media Network: ![]() 1. Had it not been for a computer error at the start of my senior year in high school, I might never have become a reporter. I'd signed up for study hall, but the computer assigned me to advanced journalism, which was the class that produced the student newspaper. 2. I may have been the three-time spelling champion from Forestville Union Elementary School, but I can't add two and two without a calculator or counting on my fingers and toes. My brother, though, could solve the most complicated math equation in his head but could barely spell his name. 3. I've ridden a horse three times and have been bucked off three times. No more! 4. My first car was a Plymouth Barricuda. (Don't judge! It was a gift) 5. I don't have a middle name. 6. My mother made all of my clothes until I was well into my 20s. She was an excellent seamstress, and everything I wore drew compliments. The talent didn't rub off ... the only "D" I ever received was in beginner's sewing. 7. My mother also was an excellent cook, but she wouldn't let anyone into her kitchen. So I didn't learn to cook until I shared an office with the food editor at the Contra Costa Times in Walnut Creek, Calif. The food editor's best friend was Marion Cunningham, who wrote the updated Fannie Farmer Cookbook and became a protege of James Beard, and chefs like Jeremiah Tower and Alice Waters were always dropping by. I did a lot of eavesdropping! ![]() 8. The nicest celebrity I have ever interviewed was Lawrence Welk. 9. On about my third job interview after graduating college, I could see that being able to use a camera was essential to landing a job at any newspaper other than, say, the San Francisco Chronicle or San Francisco Examiner. So I started saying I knew how to use one, thinking I'd have plenty of time to take a class before anyone hired me. First day on the job at a small suburban daily: major auto accident outside our office. It was around noon and our staff photographer was nowhere to be found. City editor tells me to grab a camera and get out there. So I did, but thank goodness the staff photographer showed up just as I was fumbling around, trying to figure out how to load film into one of those clunky old Leica box cameras we used to use. (Moral of the story: Never overstate your ability or talent). 10. I'm a total Bravo-holic. Love my Housewives, my Million Dollar Listings and the folks from Southern Charm. My husband refuses to watch these shows, so I have to wait 'til he's asleep and then watch 'em when they're run again very late at night. 11. I have a deathly fear of heights that began when my cousin talked me into riding the Ferris wheel at a county fair. Ferris wheels are pretty tame, but I was so scared that the ride had to be stopped so I could be let off. 12. I don't care much for flying, either. 13. When I was 8, I spied a pair of hair clippers in the bathroom of my grandmother's home and promptly used them to shave off my eyebrows. Much to my family's dismay! 14. I paid for my college education by working as an information operator for Pacific Telephone. To this day I will look up numbers in the phone book (or Google them) before I will call 411. Those operators have it rough! 15. I also was a waitress at a snack shop at a putt-putt golf course. I lasted one shift. ![]() Working with Joanne Davidson is marvelous and she is completely professional. Since 2009, he’s become a fixture on your TV screen during newscasts. Within five years, he’s quickly become one of 9NEWS-KUSA’s top reporters due to his work ethic, talent to tell a great story through the lens of a camera and ability to shoot, edit and package his own news segments himself. Kevin is a one-man band—whatever you like to call it “backpack journalist” or “multimedia journalist”—let’s just say, he is an extremely valuable asset to the news team at 9NEWS-KUSA. Kevin is our featured “Get to Know” Colorado celebrity this week and we couldn’t be happier. He’s someone you definitely should know, especially on the PR side of things. If anyone should tell your story, it should be Kevin. He has an eye to detail and a way of making people comfortable who aren’t use to being on camera. Kevin is just a stand-up guy. When he’s not on TV, he is usually exploring our beautiful state or visiting his family in New York. When you meet him, he’ll probably even take out his smart phone to brag about his adorably cute nephews. Below are 15 fantastic facts about Kevin Torres that you need to know: ![]() 1. I’m deathly afraid of whales. Doesn’t matter which kind of whale it is, I’m terrified. A few years back my friends tried helping me defeat this fear by going on a whale watch off of Cape Cod. I’m not sure why, but it brings me a sense of comfort. 3. I love horror films. The scarier, the better. My friends and I get together most weeks for ‘scary movie nights.' Back in the day, I don’t think I would have ever admitted it (you know, being a young journalist striving to become somebody and all), but I always looked up to 9NEWS anchor Kirk Montgomery. Today, I call him my friend. Growing up in Colorado, not too many people I know have made it on TV and it was a dream come true when I landed a job at 9NEWS in 2008. I was launching Denver’s newest entertainment hub—you may remember a little website called Metromix.com—which meant I had to work closely with Kirk to cover all things entertainment in Denver and Colorado. I was only 23 years old at the time and I sometimes couldn’t believe that I actually already accomplished my dream job. Working with Kirk Montgomery was an endless up and down rollercoaster. Mainly because he is so incredibly passionate about his job. Each news segment had to be perfection—he owed that to his fans and viewers. And since I was fairly new in the biz, I looked to him to help lead the way and teach me as much as possible. Not before long, he had faith in me to write some of his segments for the Metromix spot in his EBlock—I would create graphics, write his scripts and even would go on-air with him from time to time. It was amazing. ![]() I will never forget after two years of working at 9NEWS, we’d developed a friendship and great working relationship. We just ‘understood’ each other. One night we both got invited to attend a Calvin Klein underwear fashion show at the Cherry Creek Mall—so we loaded up our equipment and *insert sarcasm* begrudgingly went to cover the show. I just remember laughing and loving the night. The vibe in the air was miraculous. Not to mention being surrounded by really, really good looking people. After three and a half years of working at 9NEWS and leading Metromix.com to be the No. 1 entertainment site in Denver, I left the station and became the PR Manager at Elitch Gardens. I didn’t stop working with Kirk once I left—in fact, I looked to him to help cover some of Elitch’s big events and he was always responsive and so willing to help me out. Today, May 9, 2014 is a sad day for Denver. A sad day for Kirk. A sad day for me. And a sad day for his viewers and fans across Colorado. Kirk Montgomery is saying farewell to his 9NEWS-KUSA viewers in the 4 p.m. newscast and will be heading to WILX in Lansing, Michigan to anchor. I will be watching the E-Block with tear-filled eyes. I know that we’ll still keep in touch via social media, e-mail and a quick phone call—but to not know that I can reach out and work with him again on the PR side of things for Colorado Media Network breaks my heart. It figures, right when I launch my very own full-service Marketing and PR firm, one of my favorite friends and media member is leaving. This morning I reached out to Kirk to see if he could give me a list of his favorite things about Colorado before he signs off on 9NEWS. Within minutes he sent me his list. That just proved to me that he looks to me as a friend and colleague still, which means the world. Without further ado, here’s what Kirk sent to me of all his most cherished things about living in Colorado: 10. Red Rocks Amphitheatre 9. Sam’s No. 3 8. 16th Street Mall 7. Pearl Street in Boulder 6. Aurora Fox Theatre 5. The Paramount 4. Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret 3. Creede Reparatory Theatre 2. Denver Center for Performing Arts 1. The People. I love the people in Colorado so much. With that, I want to say: Thank you, Kirk. Thank you for helping me when I was so young at 9NEWS. Thank you for the many laughs we shared in the newsroom. Thanks for the amazing memories as we covered the DNC together, many fashions shows, events and all sorts of great entertainment stories along the way. Thank you for keeping in touch with me after I left the station. And thank you for being so sincere and always telling me what was on your mind and in your heart. I will miss you greatly, my friend. Does your business need help with PR? Let's talk and grow your business today. ![]() Want to discuss effective marketing? Today, the Colorado Rockies, in tandem with the six other baseball markets are having the first National Jersey Day! They created a promotional campaign that has Colorado buzzin’—and what seems like every TV reporter and anchor Tweeting a picture of themselves in their Rockies jerseys. The plan? For National Jersey Day, the Rockies Store is giving away two free tickets to anyone who buys a Rockies jersey today. The Rockies Store was smart. They took a current event and spun it to benefit them locally. They took National Jersey Day and made it about them—which seems to be working out and chances are, their jersey sales will probably increase today. What can we say? People love free stuff...and apparently that includes TV news anchor! Even if that means they buy a $60 jersey for two $20 tickets. That, folks, is effective marketing through and through. Your business can do something similar as well. Media outlets love it when there’s a national story or something huge happening on a bigger scale and some business localizes it with a fun spin. They’re constantly adding new features, updates and redesigns. It can get annoying if you just figured out how to use their new layout and then WHAMMO! they change it up on you again. This time, however, they’ve made some recent changes that have us excited. We’re going to talk about two items specifically: 1] the new Facebook “Business Manager” tool and 2] the new camera and video option that is now offered with the Facebook Messenger app. ![]() You can view more information on the Facebook Business Manager Tool –but we’ll summarize it real fast. The new tool will let you oversee your business page with everything in one place. You can manage all your Facebook pages, apps and ad accounts and – this is a big one – give user’s access without having to share your login details. It’s easier to grow your business page and engagement since it’s faster to maintain. It won’t jam up the time it takes you currently to manage your pages, apps and advertising accounts. Mashable.com put it like this: The new Business Manager will let agencies and clients securely share campaign materials—it will also let marketers add and delete ad accounts connected to a company and revoke permissions to people using the accounts. The end result? A better, easier and faster way of managing your business page, ads and users. You can visit the Facebook Business Manager Page and request your page use the tool—but you have to submit your e-mail and wait for a Facebook rep to reach out to you. How long it will take for that step? No one knows but Facebook. ![]() Okay, moving on--If you don’t have the Facebook Messenger app downloaded on your mobile device, iPad and/or tablet, we suggest you do so now. Facebook Messenger is an instant messaging service and application that provide text and voice communication—which is integrated within Facebook’s chat tool. In a nutshell: It lets users chat with friends on mobile and on the main website. Pretty cool. Bonus for selfie lovers: Facebook recently launched an update to Facebook Messenger which includes in-app camera, video and sharing feature to the tool. Hoooooray! So you can now take a photo directly in the app (instead of –gasp- having to take a photo and then uploading it to the app. Hello, time suck.) There is now a camera icon above the keyboard. Just click it to take a photo (or forward facing for a selfie) and then hit send to your friend. Learn more about the new feature and other messaging tools via Mashable. Totally freaking out just reading about the changes? Have no fear, Colorado Media Network LLC is here!
