Written by Erica Boniface ![]() I was scrolling through my Facebook newsfeed the other day and couldn’t help but chuckle at a headline The Onion posted: “Guy with 10,000 Tweets, 15 Followers About Ready to Hang It.” It’s one of those things about Twitter. You feel like the more you Tweet and hashtag like crazy, eventually you’ll grow more followers, right? Well, sort of. It really depends on the type of content you’re posting—for Twitter, we like to think of it as quality over quantity. But when you have a handle on quality content, then Tweet as much as you want. Although great grandma Ethel may love to know what you’re eating and watching on TV, the general public doesn’t give a damn. Sorry to break the news to you. What’s interesting though, we came across a recent article on the very credible site, Forbes.com with a catching headline: How to Dramatically Increase your Twitter Following. Here’s a quick except from the article where the author discusses Tweeting. A lot: “Studies have shown that the more you Tweet, the more followers you’re likely to have (users who have written under 1000 tweets typically have fewer than 100 followers, while those who have tweeted more than 10,000 times usually have followings of between 1000-5000 people). That initial immersion will pay off in terms of “market research,” as well: you’ll sharpen your editorial voice, get more comfortable with the medium and its quirks (hashtags, @ replies, and more), and learn the types of content that appeal to and engage your followers." We hate to disagree with Forbes, but regardless of what the studies say, the one rule of success you learned the first day of business school: Know what your customers want. Well, why wouldn’t that apply to Twitter, and other social media platforms for that matter? Would your potential customers want to see a picture of your whipped cream covered waffles? Well, maybe. If your business is a restaurant. But other than that, if it has no business with your business…then don’t Tweet it. Bottom line: It does pay to have professionals manage your social media platforms. They know how to grow a larger following. They know what content your customers want. They know the ins and outs of the digital world. And you know what? You've already found the pros to take charge and help garner a larger network online. Fill out the quick form below and one of our social media experts will get back to you in a jiffy. And hey, we can even have a free consultation over those whipped cream covered waffles. They sound ah-mazing.
